My Thoughts

Green swirls

I’m still reeling from this book.  I stayed up late last night to finish it and I know I should give myself a couple of days to write my thoughts down, but I just can’t help it.  I’m too excited to talk about it.

Have you ever been in the middle of a book so good that when you’re away from your book trying to carry on a conversation with other people (or at least pretending you’re listening to them) or trying to concentrate on work or whatever and all you can do is daydream about the characters in the book?

Well, that is exactly what happened with me and this book.  {Actually, this entire series really.  I remember doing it with Unlovable, all three times that I read it!}  I couldn’t wait to get every chance available to read and it’s been a tough few days for that.  On the drive to and from work, on the ferry ride both ways, during commercials, at night before going to sleep.  LOL ~ I’ve been bugging my husband all during this book. “Hey, let’s say we hit the hay early tonight?” I didn’t fool him one bit.  “So, let me guess… you’re reading another great book?”  Hell yeah I am!!

Booker Gatto  ~ Samuel, Sam, Garfield, Cruickshanks… whatever you (or Maggie) wants to call him… is one of the most amazing characters in this series.  We met him in Unlovable and I know the story was about Maggie and Seth, but I instantly fell so much in love with Booker.  I was thrilled to find out back then that Booker eventually would get his own story.  I adore him.  He was fantastic in Unlovable and cocky but adorable in Unbelievable and now in his own story… well, I just don’t know how to describe it.  He’s brilliant!  We got to (finally) learn all about why Booker ticks the way he does.  He’s got some history with losing his family when he was young that we learned about in the previous novels but Sherry Gammon delved a little deeper into his psyche with this book and I get it now.  I get the fear and cynicism.  At one point toward the end of the book I wanted to just reach in and smack him upside the head, but he had enough people already in the book wanting to do it for him. So I restrained myself. Barely.  One of my all-time favourite characters EVER.

Little miss feisty pants herself, Tess Selleck!  She’s his perfect match in all ways.  She had the most horrific past and yet she’s amazing.  The scenes that she remembers are really graphic and incredibly realistic. Those brought out some pretty intense feelings in me. She’s in hiding in fear of her life but her strength shows through and continues to grow stronger throughout the book.  She’s a wicked bad-ass underneath all that shield. Great character and fantastic match for Book.

We got to visit with all of our favourites from book 1 and 2… especially Maggie who started it all.  I love how Gammon made it a family affair. They truly are family whether they’re all related or not.  It’s an amazing heart warming cuddly cozy dynamic that they all have. It gives you the warm fuzzies just reading about them and how they all love each other so much. If something happens to one, it happens to them all.

As far as how this book goes, it was extremely well plotted out.  The dialogue was amazing.  I love the cockiness and teasing between this group. Each chapter climaxed to the next, which is why I couldn’t stop reading it.  I swear this would have been a book that I would have been able to polish off in one sitting had I not had such a hectic weekend (and life) right now for me.  It’s just one of those books that you cannot put down. Even the bad guys are great “bad guy” characters.  You love to hate them… arrgghh … and I so do.

The story is ultimately Booker’s but yet we saw everyone grow.  Of course, because everyone IS Booker’s family and part of him, therefore, it’s a part of his story.

It was a brilliant ending to an absolutely phenomenal series.

I have to say I have never been so happy with an epilogue as much as I am this one. Actually, I have to include the final chapter plus the epilogue with this.  It was like there was two epilogues almost.  The final chapter ties everything up in the most perfect little pink bow and once again ended on a major climax.  Just like most of all the chapters in the book did.

I just about had a heart attack, Sherry Gammon!!!

Then the epilogue brought closure…. and my heart broke and yet… I survived the ordeal.  A little gut-wrenching the last two chapters were, I gotta say, but I believe necessary to tie the story together and put everything to rest.  Maybe “necessary” isn’t quite the right word here, but everything was entirely fitting to the entire series and brought all three books together.

This series will join my “ALL-TIME FAVOURITES” list and Sherry Gammon is a helluva writer!  Bravo… and thank you Sherry!
