Wow! I don’t necessarily want to leave a bunch of spoilers because spoilers ruined the book for me (My fault! I sought them out and read them!) and I don’t want to do it to someone else. I want people to read this book. It is definitely a MUST-READ!
I’m absolutely heart-broken. There is no other way to say it. I’m devastated by the whole book and the ending especially and …… I’m crushed!
Oddly enough though, it’s the best book yet in the series. Bravo, Rachel Vincent!

It’s not that I necessarily have problems with Kaylee & Nash not being together anymore because obviously she’s not right for him nor he for her. Nash really has some issues that he needs to work through and although he can’t do it on his own, he also can’t do it with Kaylee.
Is Sabine the right one? No, not right now anyway. No one is. Maybe down the road she can be, but right now she’s an enabler! She can’t help him that way. She loves him and I think that maybe he loves her too but thought he could “move on and forget” with Kaylee and he can’t. Nash can’t really be with anyone right now. He needs to heal first and then realize where his head is at. If it can’t be with Kaylee then I hope it is with Sabine because Sabine needs him too, and she really does love him and truly they were together first and it wasn’t her fault that they separated. I do believe that the two of them could be together in the future. However, it would be nice for her (and him) if he could heal and then “choose” Sabine. That would make Sabine feel more like she was wanted rather than fought for him and won on a technicality.
I also am very happy for Tod. I know I don’t sound it, but I am. He finally gets some happiness for the incredibly selfless act that made him a reaper in the first place. It’s just sad that it happened to be his brother’s girlfriend. He did steal her. She wasn’t his to take and he took her anyway. He’s sad about hurting his brother but he can’t help how he feels…. and, it was Kaylee’s decision. He didn’t make the first move. She did. So I do hope for happiness for these two but more than anything I hope they can mend their relationship with Nash and help him become the person that he truly was meant to be… and be happy. Nash & Kaylee need to mend their relationship so they can be friends because they do truly care for each other and Tod & Nash need to mend their relationship because they’re family.
What I DO have a problem with and it’s the reason the whole book was so devastating for me was that Nash was already feeling pretty bad that he was going to lose Kaylee because her time was up and two days before that happened, she cheats on him with his own brother and then dumps him. That’s pretty shitty timing on her part. She didn’t know she was coming back and Nash damn well didn’t know so had she died and not come back the last thing he’s left with is that she hurt him and didn’t want him. That’s just all kinds of wrong in my books.
Regardless if they (Tod & Kaylee) were meant for each other or not, why hurt someone like that when he only thinks there are 2 days left? Why jump right into another relationship regardless of how “right” it feels when there are only 2 days left? She dies and leaves two broken hearts behind… not to mention the family and friends hearts. She could have spoken to Tod and let him know how she felt but not act on it knowing there was only 2 days left. Why hurt people like that? As it turned out, they have all the time in the world for each other now and would have been able to break the news to Nash delicately instead of “getting caught”.
Yes, I know her & Tod never meant to hurt anyone and they can’t help their feelings but it’s just a shame that it went down the way it did. Nash wouldn’t have lost it the way he did. He wouldn’t have tried to control Kaylee again the way he did and I’m not saying that it’s Kaylee’s fault. It is, but she can’t help how she feels and she can’t control Nash’s decisions of self-distruction. I just think it’s such a shame to shed such a bad light on such a fantastic character as Nash.
One other tiny little thing I have a problem with is… why can Kaylee forgive Tod so easily when he knowingly put her life in danger but yet she can’t seem to forgive Nash for using when it technically was her fault he was subjected to the stuff in the first place. I mean I suppose I could almost answer that one myself. She never really was IN-LOVE with Nash. She loves him dearly, but as friends and wants to see him safe but she’s not in love with him. Tod, she felt a connection with from the very beginning and now she realizes that the connection is and was deeper than friendship. Although if this were fully true then why couldn’t she be with Nash during the time he was trying to get off the demon’s breath when he needed her the most? She wouldn’t have felt so entirely betrayed by him had it JUST been friendship.
I truly truly hope and pray that books 6 & 7 have a lot of healing and mending of relationships. Kaylee & Nash has been through a lot together and should be best of friends. They both need their friendship with each other and Tod needs his brother back.
