Derek Brighton has become one of Dallas’s finest detectives through a combination of discipline and obsession. Once he has a target in his sights, nothing can stop him. When he isn’t solving homicides, he applies the same intensity to his playtime at Sanctum, a secretive BDSM club. Unfortunately, no amount of beautiful submissives can fill the hole that one woman left in his heart.
Karina Mills has a reputation for being reckless, and her clients appreciate her results. As a private investigator, she pursues her cases with nothing holding her back. In her personal life, Karina yearns for something different. Playing at Sanctum has been a safe way to find peace, but the one Dom who could truly master her heart is out of reach.
On the hunt for a killer, Derek enters a shadowy underworld only to find the woman he aches for is working the same case. Karina is searching for a missing girl and won’t stop until she finds her. To get close to their prime suspect, they need to pose as a couple. But as their operation goes under the covers, unlikely partners become passionate lovers while the killer prepares to strike.
Well this was a nice little snack to tide me over until the next, and I’m sure just as amazing, instalment comes in this series.
Honestly, I cannot seem to get enough of the McKay-Taggart boys and their friends at Sanctum. Derek Brighton is a policeman and doesn’t work directly with the Taggarts, but they all know each other and I want to say are friends, but none of them would ever admit that they liked anybody, especially Ian (my hero), so we’ll leave it at that. Ultimately they’re all brothers and have each other’s backs regardless of the put-on animosity. What do you expect when you get a room full of alpha males? The same holds true with Derek. He fits right in with this gang. He’s got his baggage like everyone else and seems to not be able to take his eyes off a certain Sanctum submissive. She won’t give him the time of day, which makes him want her even more.
Karina Mills is a submissive by night but yet tough investigator by day. She’s been a member of Sanctum and has worked closely with McKay-Taggart for quite awhile now. She’s got her share of baggage and can’t seem to stop thinking about Derek Brighton, but apparently she isn’t Derek’s type since every time he looks at her he seems angry. She doesn’t understand why he doesn’t like her but takes on a “whatever” attitude about it and she can be snarky.
Add in a dangerous serial killer and the lives of one of their own in danger and you’ve got the two of them coming together to work the case.
Sparks are flying and setting fire all over this book!
Seriously, this book is a lot smaller than the others because it’s a novella, but man it packs just as much excitement and flame as any of the others.
Derek and Karina are completely meant for each other and their story is sweet. We learn a lot about each of them separately and together. I love them both! I love how Lexi Blake can bring all of the favourite characters back into each instalment without them even playing a part. Some of them were in this book and others we never saw, but they were all mentioned. It’s like if one is there they’re all there. It’s a family.
I love this book and I ADORE this entire series. Keep bringing them and I will keep buying and reading them!
