He awakens encapsulated in dirt with no knowledge of how he came to be there. Riddled with injuries, he can remember neither his past nor who he is. Nor can he remember what he is. But surely no mortal man could survive being buried deep beneath the earth. All he knows with certainty is that the soothing voice and presence of the woman moving around above enables him to endure the agony of his wounds. And he will do whatever it takes to be with her.
When Susan first sees the old two-story house for sale, such warmth and longing fill her that--against all reason--she makes an offer. It will take years of hard work and money she frankly doesn't have to fix up the place. So she can't explain why she bought it. She also can't explain what compels her to spend hours one night, digging in the basement until she unearths a man. A man who still lives and breathes despite having been buried alive. A man whose intense brown eyes glow amber with pain, declaring him far more than ordinary. Susan knows she should keep her distance. He has no memory and possesses gifts that would make most fear him. But as the two work together to unravel the mystery of his past, she finds herself drawn in by his teasing nature and tender touch. So much so that she loses her heart to him even as they find themselves hunted by unknown enemies who are ruthless in their quest to capture them.
Awaken The Darkness is book #8 in the Immortal Guardians series by Dianne Duvall.
I’m very excited about this book! If you haven’t read Phantom Embrace (book #5.5) my suggestion is to read it first. Well, read ALL of them first, but especially 5.5. Each book can technically be read alone, but you are missing out on a mega shit ton of Immortal Guardian goodness if you do. Just sayin’!
I love this entire series! The books are very far apart or at least it would seem so, but they are completely worth the wait every single time.
Again, if you have read previous books you will have already met and drooled over Stanislav & Yuri, the Russian Immortal Guardians. Honestly you can almost hear their accents while reading. It’s fantastic!
A couple of “battles” back, tragedy struck and Stanislav went missing for a long time. The greatest Immortal Guardian ever and leader of the entire pack, Seth, couldn’t find him. If he couldn’t find him then he must be gone forever.
Well eventually, somebody does in fact find Stanislav, but she is no Immortal Guardian. Susan is a writer who moves to a remote area where people do not know her. She only wants her anonymity and privacy…. and maybe someday to belong. She certainly didn’t want to buy an old fixer upper home but something compelled her to keep returning and finally bought the place. It was here that a voice called out to her in her mind and begged for her not to leave him.
Not to sound like a broken record, but did I say that I love this series? Oh my gosh this was one of the best books ever! I could not put it down. Right out of the gate I knew this was going to be fantastic because of Dianne Duvall’s idea to have Stanislav buried alive and not remember who or what he is! I mean c’mon!!! Who wouldn’t dive into that?
Loved it! A little bit more intimacy would have been cool, but the anticipation was almost better. Susan is a beast! Can’t wait to see more of her in future books.
One last note… I cannot let a review go by without mentioning my favourite character, Seth. Honestly my heart just bleeds for this guy. All of Dianne Duvall’s characters are amazing and drool-worthy but Seth totally takes the cake!
I cannot wait for the next book!
